Zeeuws-Vlaanderen truly is a breath of fresh air

What is it like to be a brand-new resident of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen? I know better than anyone. In December, I moved—with my husband Gert-Jan and our three sons—to the municipality of Hulst. And what a breath of fresh air it is compared to the Randstad! People are much more relaxed. As a result, they have more time for things. Those things can also settle better.

Zeeland was certainly not new to me. I was born in Delfzijl, Groningen. I grew up on Walcheren. I left the province for my studies. But the memories were so good, they were the reason for my application. And since October 2022, I have had the honor of being the mayor of Hulst. It's been about four months now, and it feels right!

Hulst is wonderfully down-to-earth. People are very approachable and also enthusiastic. I have already received many invitations to get acquainted. All kinds of introductions. So much fun!

I'm also quite curious and love to go outside. That's where you see real life and get a feel for what's going on. Much better than from behind your desk or the meeting table.

I didn’t want to be a mayor just anywhere. The place had to suit me. After four months, I can truly say that I made a good assessment: It suits me perfectly! Hulst is relaxed, but at the same time, a lot is happening. That goes for all of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. It is an incredibly diverse and fascinating region. It's wonderful to be able to live and work here. I can recommend it to everyone.
